Marrakech<\/strong>, also spelled\u00a0Marrakesh,\u00a0<\/strong>chief city of central Morocco. The first of Morocco\u2019s four imperial cities, it lies in the center of the fertile, irrigated Haouz Plain, south of the\u00a0Tennsift River<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>

The ancient section of the city, known as the Medina, was designated a\u00a0UNESCO<\/a>\u00a0World Heritage site<\/a>\u00a0in 1985.<\/p>

Marrakech gave its name to the kingdom of which it was long the capital.
